Test total ammonia. The target is 1–2 ppm. Do not keep adding more because the reading falls. The bacteria are using the ammonia, so a lower test is not a reason to top it up.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou will need test kits for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH. Dechlorinate the water first. Turn the skimmer and UV off, and remove fine filter socks, until cycling is complete. The cycle is finished only when ammonia and nitrite read zero and nitrate is present.
